Manufactured by the Federo Dining Car Company. Year of manufacture unknown. Some of the famous people who have dined here include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Barbra Streisand, Babe Ruth, Madonna, Steven Speilberg, Charles Lindberg, Kate Winslet, Will Smith, Liza Minelli, David Bowie, Sharon Stone, Mary Kate Olsen, and Albert Einstein. Quite a variety, but there were many more celebrities who dined there. It's not a "celebrity hangout", but it's a diner most people love, so of course celebrities would show up there too. The Empire Diner website states "apparently, everyone eats here sooner or later". That seems to be true!
The menu that is more trendy than most diners - (going with the current trend of 12.5 for a price rather than $12.50), and they also serve beer, wine, liquor, espresso, and cappuccino (none of which you would find at a "typical diner" throughout the U.S. But, they also have all of the classic diner beverages - coffee, tea, whole milk, O.J, and soda, of course.
As of July 2009, current prices for food range from $6 for an Grilled American Cheese, $5 for a bowl of today's soup, $5 for fried eggs - Kaiser roll, to $13.50 for an Empire Steak Burger with cheese, $15 for a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, or their most expensive entree on the menu - Fire Grilled Rib Eye Steak with Chelsea fries or Salad for $23. You can also get a chocolate egg cream for $4, a hot fudge sundae for $8, and quite a variety of other desserts. See their website for their current menu and prices.
