Fred's General Mercantile in Beech Mountain, NC began in 1979, but the store is like an old fashioned mercantile because it has everything you need, although the merchandise is new and modern. There is a grocery store, hardware store, and clothing store. Plus, The Backside Deli. 

According to their website, The Backside Deli serves "delicious sandwiches, homemade soups and salads, zesty pizzas, your favorite beverages, including beer and wines, along with homemade brownies, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream.  The deli spills out onto a garden patio in a wooded setting where wildlife is abundant.  We can pack a picnic for that special outing or arrange any of our menu items to go."
