Who knew a water tower could be so beautiful? Wilmington Delaware. That's Who.
Have you ever seen an Italian Renaissance Revival Style water tower? If only all water towers were made of natural field stone like this one, or at least if they could be a little bit more about form - not just function. Most water towers look like enormous white tanks or rusty UFOs towering high above houses.
However, I do recall seeing a few novelty water towers, which I have enjoyed. One was a Mickey Mouse water tower at MGM Studios in Orlando. Another was a peach water tower in Gaffney, South Carolina.

In this video, the man stated that his great grandfather was a brick layer, involved in the construction of the inside of the water tower. I have so much respect for the brick layers that helped build America.
My great great aunt was married to a brick layer. She lived to be over 100 years old. I had a conversation with her when she was in her late 90's about what she thought I should look for in a future husband. She said that she believed I should look for a man who knew a trade. There was a definite generation gap to that statement, since that wouldn't be the first response you'd get from women these days if you asked them what the most important trait is they are looking for in a husband. You just never see a personal ad that says "Woman seeks man who knows a trade". But, I think her reasons for wanting a man with a trade are actually similar to what many women want today. She was proud of the fact that he was talented, that he was great at what he did, and that he took the time to learn to lay bricks the right way. Plus, having a trade meant that they would both have a lifetime of stability. There would always be work for him, which meant they would be financially stable plus he would feel good about himself.
She was quite a modern woman for her time. She didn't get married until she was 27, which was considered "old" back then, which meant that she was called a "spinster" or "old maid" by others behind her back. She was quite proud of her decision to wait until she met the right man, plus, she had a strong sense of independence and a strong foundation. In her own way, she was a brick house.
Thank you to onemon22 for sharing this video on youtube. Thank you also to all the brick layers who helped build this world one brick at a time.
