The Titanic Menu - Dining on the Titanic
25 years ago, on September 1, 1985, the Titanic was discovered at the bottom of the ocean, nearly 75 years after it sank. Over the years, many artifacts from the Titanic have been retrieved from the bottom of the ocean, including china that was still in excellent condition. Of course, paper items, such as the Titanic's menu, could not survive in the ocean.
However, there were obviously menus that never made it on the ship in the first place, which is how the chef in the interview in the YouTube video was able to find out what was served to the first, second, and third class passengers at dinner before the ship hit the iceberg, then sank to the bottom of the ocean.
I recall years ago seeing a story on TV about a man who bought a painting someone had painted years ago of the Titanic, and it was discovered that the back side of the painting contained something far more valuable - a menu from the Titanic. While the painting had little value, the menu sold for a fortune. I also heard about a dfferent menu that survived because a woman who was rescued in a rescue boat had a menu in he purse.
For breakfast, third class passengers received oatmeal porridge and milk, smoked herrings, jacket potatoes, ham & eggs, fresh bread and butter, marmalade, Swedish bread, coffee, and tea.
Not bad at all for third class!
