There's a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Alabama - and it's the only FLW house in the southeast you can actually tour!
In our Retropolis Tour around America, we begin with Alabama. When you think of homes in Alabama, you might not think "modern architecture". But, Alabama has it's very own Frank Lloyd Wright house!
Imagine being a newlywed couple, and by chance you meet Frank Lloyd Wright, who designs low cost homes for middle income families. He designs a 1,540 sf home for you on a 2 acre lot facing the Tennessee River. These days a newlywed couple is lucky if they can even afford a cookie cutter home on a patch of grass. To have a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at a low cost even... talk about a dream home.
The Rosenbaums were lucky enough to meet Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 30's. Their Usonian style home was built for them in 1939. Four sons later, they were ready for a bigger home. Rarely do I see a home addition that looks outstanding; too often home additions look like home additions. Luckily, they were able to get Wright again to do the addition, which was done so beautifully that it was as if the addition was part of the home in the first place. A home addition that was done the Wright way.
This video was obviously made some time ago, because it is now possible to tour the home and even see some of the original Frank Lloyd Wright furniture inside. The city of Florence now owns the home, and it has been fully restored. Tours at this time cost $8.00 per person. Located at 601 Riverview Dr. in Florence, AL. For more info, go to:
