The Mojave Phone Booth - a lonely old phone booth in the Mojave Desert
Ring Ring! The Mojave Desert is calling! It wants it's phone booth back!
There used to be a phone booth out in the Mojave Desert. I know, there used to be phone booths EVERYWHERE. But, this one was special. That's because it was out in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't at a gas station or motel. It was literally out in the middle of nowhere, miles and miles from any buildings, and even eight miles from any paved roads.
You just have to read the story behind this phone booth to find out why it was placed there in the 60's, how it was discovered in 1997, and how the story spread all over the internet, : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojave_phone_booth
Awesome story!
So, after people all over the world found out about this phone booth, AND the phone number to this phone booth, people all over the world began to CALL this phone booth. And other people would go out of the way to DRIVE to this phone booth, even camping out there to answer calls from around the world.
I love it! I love that a lonely old phone booth in the Mojave Desert would ring out at all hours of the night, as people all over the world gave it a call to see if anyone would be there to answer. I have this vision in my mind of this phone booth ringing and ringing, with nobody to hear the ringing but the desert itself.
You can see from the video what happened when someone was there to answer when the phone rang. I can just imagine the people on the other end of the line who must have been so excited that they connected with that phone booth in the desert. Even if nobody had answered, it must have been fun to call at least once, just to know that you are making the desert ring out in the night.
I missed out. I missed out on calling, and I missed out even more on camping by the phone booth so I could stay up late in the middle of the desert, talking with people all over the world. What a cool experience that must have been!
Thank you to DesertTripper for documenting this and sharing it on YouTube! I could almost feel what it was like to be there that night, and I enjoyed the surprise in the sky at the end of the video too! AWESOME! DesertTripper has a great blog with photos and more information about their journey to the Mojave National Preserve to spend time in the desert phone booth: http://deserttripper.99k.org/mpbtrip1.htm
If you went to the Wikipedia link I provided further up the page, you know by now that the desert phone booth is no longer there. It was sadly ordered to be removed from the desert in May of 2000. I found a video of one of it's final days here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aor3edQpaDk&feature=related
