It's cold season, kids, and you know what that means...
You better get those galoshes on, or else you'll get a cold. Jim was practically begging for a cold letting his feet get wet like that. ;) According to this 1940's film, cod liver oil is "extra sunshine for us in winter and spring". I'm sure it tastes as delicious as sunshine feels too. Mmmmm yummy cod livery goodness!
I was fascinated that the little girl was taught to spit in the toilet when brushing her teeth, so as not to splash her germ infested toothpaste all over the sink. Father put a washstand downstairs so that his son would remember to wash up downstairs. Back then, two bathrooms in a home were not as common. I loved their bathroom sink!
The narrator stated that Jim's "throat isn't very red, but his eyes look queer." Queer eyes wouldn't have been considered an insult back then. In later years the word "queer" seemed to only be used as a derrogatory word for those who are gay. However, in more recent years, many people in the gay community have taken the word back as their own, such as with the slogan "We're here, we're queer. Get used to it." or with the TV show "Queer As Folk". Today, to say that someone has a queer eye would be a compliment (only if used by those who are gay-friendly), because the men on "Queer Eye For A Straight Guy" showed that to have a queer eye is a great thing. Just look at all the straight men who were helped by the gay men on that show.
Back to colds. You'll learn in the film that you should take a lesson from the Dutch because Dutch people are clean. They leave their wooden shoes on the porch to keep their homes clean. Just keep that in mind during cold season, kids. Keep those wooden shoes on the porch and you'll be one step closer to being cold-free.
