I LOVE LUCY! 1911 - Lucy is born. 1951 - Lucy is pregnant. Or "expecting".

Lucille Ball was born on this day 99 years ago. It's hard to believe because we see her on TV all the time and she always seems so young. Lucille Ball was born August 6, 1911. Nearly forty years later, in 1951, she  created and starred in "I Love Lucy" with her husband Desi Arnaz. A month before her fortieth birthday, she gave birth to their first baby.  A year and a half later, she gave birth to their second child. What a busy time of her life that must have been with a new TV show and two babies! And yet, she was able to perform comedy on "I Love Lucy" in a way that would make her unforgettable in American pop culture.

The video shows a clip of when Lucy revealed to Ricky that she was pregnant. You'll need a tissue to watch it because it's so very touching. It's easy to see that they were truly in love.

Although Lucille Ball was obviously a modern mother, she still wasn't allowed to use the word "pregnant" on TV. She had to use the word "expecting" instead. I wonder why the word "pregnant" was such a "dirty word" for television. Well, now that I think about it, Lucy and Ricky did have separate beds on "I Love Lucy", so if separate beds were required back then TV-land, pregnancy just didn't happen in TV-land.

What would American television have been without "I Love Lucy"? That show changed American television forever.

Happy 99th Birthday to Lucille Ball! I never watched an episode of "I Love Lucy" until I was an adult, but I laughed out loud at the very first episode I ever watched, and have continued to laugh at every episode I have seen ever since. I give them so much credit for creating timeless comedy that is just as funny 60 years later.

Thank you to easterner2008 for posting the "I Love Lucy" video clip on YouTube.

To see a home movie of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at home in their pool with their babies, then later in life as grandparents in the pool with their first grandchild, look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woYs85r3aSo

It's so touching! They even perform Babalu in the pool with their grandson. Lucy and Desi... makes you wish they were never apart.
