Give a hoot - don't pollute!
Owls were very popular in the 1970's, and their popularity was over long before I was a teenager in the late 80's. I wondered then if they would ever make a come-back. As a little girl, I recall seeing owl art on people's walls, owl figurines on bookshelves, owl pendants around people's necks, owl shaped bottles, macrame owls, etc. Well, guess whoooooos back? The owl, that's whoooooo!
Owls have become increasingly popular again in the last couple years for home decor, clothing, jewelry and accessories. That got me thinking about if there were any famous owls. And then I remembered - Woodsy!
Woodsy Owl used to be on TV commercials all the time when I was a child, but I haven't seen him on TV for a long time. Really, Woodsy was "green" long before most people began to even take their first steps in going "green". Woodsy taught us not to litter, and he taught us to care for the environment in other ways too. In the video, he shows us the importance of trees.
The beginning of the video shows a tiny moment from the children's TV show "New Zoo Revue". I used to love that show when I was little, and that reminded me of another famous owl - Charlie the Owl (who was on New Zoo Revue). I also remember a wise owl calculator I had as a child, but I forgot it's name.
Thanks to all the wise old owls of my childhood. And thanks to rrunner81sg for sharing the Woodsy video on YouTube. According to Wikipedia, Woodsy the Owl is still the mascot for the United States Forest Service, and a new Woodsy mascot was introduced in 2006: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodsy_Owl The Woodsy that I grew up with was created by Harold Bell (producer of Smokey Bear and Lassie) for the first Earth Day in 1970.

Owls
We love owls! Good to know they are making a comeback! I was actually reading about owl symbolism the other night, and apparently in the 1800's, owls were "spooky and scary"; symbolizing death or bad things. It was only in the 1900's that they were introduced as "wise" and "knowing". Interesting!
