Day After Mardi Gras - Ash Wednesday and Prayer
At midnight at the end of Mardi Gras, street sweepers come along with police officers declaring the end of Mardi Gras and the season of Carnival. On Fat Tuesday people are collecting Mardi Gras beads, while on Ash Wednesday, they return to their rosary beads. Ash Wednesday is the day we see people walking around with ash crosses on their foreheads. For some people Ash Wednesday is just like any other day. For some, it is a day of repentance, marking the beginning of Lent. Some choose to fast. Some choose to pray. Although religion and prayer isn't discussed much during Mardi Gras, it is certainly a topic of discussion the morning after.
Speaking of saving a prayer until the morning after, "Save A Prayer" just happens to be my favorite Duran Duran song of all time. This wasn't a big hit in America, but it was very big in Europe. Although it was released in 1983, I didn't really fall in love with the song until a few years later. It's not about Ash Wednesday, but it's a great excuse to play a great song from 25 years ago.
