Baked Apples - a delicious autumn recipe from 94 year old great grandmother, Clara

If your grandparents and great grandparents lived through the Great Depression like mine did, you probably grew up hearing stories of what they went through back then. People who were poor would wait in long lines just for soup or cheese. (I know, you're thinking, "Wouldn't anyone want to wait in line for free cheese?!" Well, not the cheese that was given out during the Great Depression. Basically, you would have been waiting in line for cheese that stunk in a way that no cheese is supposed to stink).

Food in those days was never ever wasted. That generation was not ashamed of leftovers, nor were they bored with them. Leftovers were a blessing. Fruit would never rot because all fruit was appreciated, and, therefore, eaten. We have a lot to learn from our grandparents and great grandparents' generations.

In this video, Clara, a 94 year old great grandmother and cook, shows us how to make a recipe from the Great Depression. Learn how to make Baked Apples. I love how she shows us how she used to grate her cinnamon! I also love her owl cookie jar, which just happens to go great with this yummy Fall recipe.

After some time in the oven, your home will smell like Autumn. Just close your eyes and imagine what that baked apple smell meant to your grandparents during the Great Depression. Very special!

Thanks to the wonderful Clara at DepressionCooking for sharing her recipes on YouTube. Clara has a DVD available, and a book of recipes is coming out soon! Thanks to my brother for introducing me to Clara's videos!
