Atomic Age Decor

Home decor can be influenced by global changes or world events. In the last decade, we saw this happen after September 11, 2001, when stars and stripes and patriotic colors and designs were suddenly more popular than they had ever been before. We also saw America become more "green" - literally. Going "green" meant that we were making more of an effort to take care of our environment, but the color green also became popular at the same time because it made us feel pure, and clean, and "green". People began painting their homes green, both inside and out, green bed and table linens became popular, green kitchenware became popular, etc.

It's hard to imagine ahead of time what will influence home decor. I would have never imagined that an atomic bomb would inspire interior design, but it certainly did in the 40's, 50's, and early 60's.

The atomic age began on this day sixty five years ago. On July 16, 1945 the first nuclear weapon was detonated in New Mexico. It was only a test, but it was successful. The first atomic bombs were developed under the codename "The Manhattan Project": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project

Some people had a sense of nuclear optimism, that nuclear technology would help people in a positive way. Therefore, atomic age symbols gave people a positive sense of the future, and this is why it started to become popular in home decor.

I couldn't find a video on YouTube that showed specifically only atomic age decor, but the video above shows 1950's decor, and you can see atomic age and space age influences. For someone like me who loves 50's decor, this home made my heart go pitter-pat. I actually had to keep pausing it just so I could let my eyes wander at every detail. Now THIS is a 50's gem!

Thank you to kittyandclark for posting this video of this beautiful home on YouTube so others can enjoy the fabulous 40's and 50's designs!
