Here's a 60's school film on cleanliness and health

I'm sick today, and I know that several of my friends who live in other states are either sick right now, or were sick recently. So, watch out for germs, kids. I don't even have swine flu, and yet this is annoying and exhausting even as a regular sore throat / cold combo.  I can imagine how terrible the swine flu must be. So, take the advice from this 1960's school film and wash, wash, wash. I'm a frequent hand washer and I still got sick, but at least you will be less likely to get ill if you frequently wash your hands. read more...

Baked Apples - a delicious autumn recipe from 94 year old great grandmother, Clara

If your grandparents and great grandparents lived through the Great Depression like mine did, you probably grew up hearing stories of what they went through back then. People who were poor would wait in long lines just for soup or cheese. (I know, you're thinking, "Wouldn't anyone want to wait in line for free cheese?!" Well, not the cheese that was given out during the Great Depression. Basically, you would have been waiting in line for cheese that stunk in a way that no cheese is supposed to stink). read more...

Our Lives in Pictures

Can you imagine taking a photo every day of your life?  Jamie Livingston decided to do that thirty years ago with his Polaroid camera. He was only 21 when he began taking a photo a day. He continued taking a photo every day of his life until he died on his birthday, October 25, 1997. He was only 41 years old, but he left behind an outstanding collection of photos documenting nearly half of his life.  read more...

40 Years Ago: October 1969. Sugar Sugar was a number one hit. But, have you heard the gospel / soul version?

October is always a sweet month, but it was extra sweet forty years ago when the number one song was "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies (written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim).  read more...

What are Goths? What is Goth? Who are Goths? What about Gothic Architecture?

In this video, The Lady of the Manners of Gothic Charm School explains what Goth is, and what Goth isn't. I found this by looking up Gothic architecture (a style of French architecture from the 12th century), but I got all distracted when I saw this video. So, I'll come back to that another day. For now, let's just talk about goths. She does a good job in this video explaining who goths are and what they're into.  read more...

Give a hoot - don't pollute!

Owls were very popular in the 1970's, and their popularity was over long before I was a teenager in the late 80's. I wondered then if they would ever make a come-back. As a little girl, I recall seeing owl art on people's walls, owl figurines on bookshelves, owl pendants around people's necks, owl shaped bottles, macrame owls, etc. Well, guess whoooooos back? The owl, that's whoooooo!  read more...

70 Years Ago: An Art Deco High School Built in the Year of "The Wizard of Oz" - 1939

"It wasn't Gothic. It wasn't Roman. It wasn't Spanish. It wasn't this, that, or the other damn thing. It was just something that was an expression of our time." - Joseph Koberling, one of the designers of Will Rogers High School in Tulsa.

I can't imagine if my high school looked like Will Rogers High School. How inspiring that must have been! It would have been like going to school in Radio City Music Hall. I wonder if kids who go to school there today or who went there in more recent years understand how special that school is.  read more...

Christmas in 75

It's about 75 days until Christmas, so I thought you might want to visit Christmas in 1975. This vintage home movie brought back a whole rush of memories to me. I even remembered the SMELL of cardboard boxes and new toys on Christmas morning. My brother and I had an avocado green toy oven very similar to the one these kids got for Christmas. I still remember the squeak it made when it would open and shut. Kids these days have plastic kitchens, but back in our day, they were made of tin (which meant future rust, and the possibility of cutting yourself on a sharp corner). read more...
