Happy Birthday Lily Tomlin! And Edith Ann.... who will always be 5 1/2.

When I was a little girl, I LOVED Lily Tomlin's Edith Ann character in the 70's on Sesame Street. I used to immitate her voice a lot. Kids love adults that seem to relate to them, and Lily Tomlin certainly understood kids. Thank you to sawing14s for posting one of my favorite skits from childhood on YouTube. I'd love to see that giant rocking chair to see how big it really was. read more...

Remember watching filmstrips in school? Well, here's a Halloween one!

It was always a treat at school when they'd turn the lights off so we could watch a film, even if it was one of these flip filmstrips that was more like a slideshow. I remember they were often accompanied by a tape with distorted music and a narrator. Plus, a loud beep which would let our teacher (or the lucky student volunteer) know when to flip to the next scene.  read more...

1950's Halloween Costume Parade

This 50's home movie was uploaded to YouTube by homemoviedepot who stated that it is Donald E. Boyd's home movies. In the beginning of the video, you'll see kids parading their 50's Halloween costumes (based on the info at YouTube, I believe this is from 1956). I think these home movies were all filmed in Port Huron, Michigan.  read more...

What was the 1950's dream of hospitals of the future?

To some people, the dream was a drawer in the wall that a baby could slide through, that way mother could hold baby whenever she'd like. Then, place baby back in the drawer and send him back over to the nurses. It reminds me of when you pull up to a bank drive thru and put your money into one of those capsules and send it off to the banker. However, baby doesn't fly through a tube, thank goodness.  read more...

1950 - When nightly dinner time with the family was almost as big as a Broadway theater production

For some people these days, the only time they have a family dinner around the table is on Thanksgiving, and possibly Christmas. Some people eat at the dinner table with the family one day a week or a few days a week. Some people do still eat at the dinner table with their family every night, but rarely does anyone today go through a whole production like this. Mother and Daughter change their clothes to look more presentable to the family. I think it's sweet the way the daughter takes the mother's hand. There's a definite sweetness to this video. read more...
