40 Years Ago: International House of Pancakes Commercial - What IS this?

At first I honestly thought the audio was messed up on this, but it's not. This is exactly what this commercial sounded like 40 years ago. You gotta love the late 60's and the 70's. Many people that saw this on youtube commented that the people who came up with this commercial must have been on something... some sort of trip, if ya know what I mean. read more...

The very first "It" Girl and America's First Sex Symbol - Clara Bow

When you hear someone saying, "She's got "IT" or "She has the "it" factor", they're talking about that "special something" that is hard to define. This term was first ever used on Clara Bow, who starred in the movie "It" and became known as "The It Girl" after the film's release in 1927. A character in the movie "It" described "it" with the definition, "It...that strange magnetism which attracts both sexes...entirely unself-conscious...full of self-confidence...indifferent to the effect...she is producing and uninfluenced by others." read more...

Clara Bow, the First "It" Girl, Having Fun at a 1920's Amusement Park

This is Clara Bow in the 1927 movie that made her most famous - "It". This is the movie which made people call her the "It" girl. Not only did we appreciate her gorgeous expressions, which are perfect for silent film, but we were also very amused by the 20's amusement park scenes. read more...

Hastings, Nebraska - Birthplace of Kool-Aid. Here's a 70's Kool Aid commercial for ya!

I didn't know that Kool-Aid was born in Hastings, Nebraska. You will even find the Kool Aid man's footprints there in cement and a Kool Aid museum.

My first memories of Kool Aid are the commercials of the Kool Aid guy crashing through walls with a fruity red pitcher of Kool Aid at just the right moment when kids were miserably thirsty. read more...

No need to fear the reaper. This friendly older English gentleman shows us how to use a scythe.

Many people today think of the scythe as the weapon the Grim Reaper holds. However, the scythe is really just an early lawn mower. In this video, thanks to Ernie, we can see how people used to mow grass with a scythe. read more...

30 Years Ago. Or 40 Years Ago? MacArthur Park "Someone left the cake out in the rain..."

When I was a little girl during the disco era, I heard the disco version of this song by Donna Summer. That was the ONLY version I knew. I didn't know that the song had already been recorded ten years earlier by Jimmy Webb. I was too young to understand what a metaphor or symbolism was, so when I heard Donna singing so tragically about someone leaving a cake out in the rain, I took it literally.  read more...

Las Vegas, Nevada at night in the 1950's - Viva 50's Vegas Neon!

What happens in Vegas SHOULD HAVE stayed in Vegas. But, not everything in Vegas has stayed in Vegas, as we can see in this home movie shot in 1957. These neon signs were AMAZING. They were so amazing that someone was willing to shoot a bunch of them with their camera back in the 1950's. Film was costly, so for someone to use this much film just to shoot the neon signs is proof in itself how dazzling these signs were. read more...

Wildwood, New Jersey - a 1950's Motel Wonderland

Too many buildings from the 50's continue to be torn down across the country by people who don't understand that what goes out of style for a while eventually becomes well loved again, and often even appreciated to the point that it becomes historic. Retropolis salutes the people of Wildwood, NJ for thinking ahead and realizing that not only do many people appreciate these buildings now, but MANY more will appreciate them in the future. read more...
