50 Years Ago: British Decor in Nov. 1959 - Sunken Living Room & Mid-Century Modern Furniture
This is what the ideal home in Great Britain was supposed to look like in Great Britain fifty years ago (pretty similar to the 50's American dream).
Why did the sunken living room ever go out of style? Don't you just love the one in this magazine (featured around :10)? With a sunken living room like that, friends can all gather around in a circle (or square, in this case) and chat and play games. If there are toddlers in the house, they can safely toddle around a sunken living room as though it's a big playpen (as long as you block off the stairs and make sure there''s nothing to crash into).
I've never seen a wood slat bench in a bathroom before (as seen in 2:50), and I'm guessing any wooden slat benches that were placed in a bathroom back then got covered in water spots over the years.
I noticed in one of the ads that the furniture shown was available at Harrod's. I'm not sure who the designer was of that red chair from Harrod's, but it certainly got my attention. Thank you to Joans20thCentury for creating this video of the British House and Garden magazine from November 1959.

Sunken living room
That is a KILLER sunken living room. How can I get one? Do I lower a section of our basement ceiling or raise the rest of our living room floor with the exception of one section? Ah well. Maybe I'll just add it to the list of wants for our future dream home.
