40 Years Ago: Ozzy Osbourne in 1970 - Black Sabbath Live!
This live performance of "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath was recorded in Paris forty years ago. Little did anyone know back in 1970 that the lead singer of this band, Ozzy Osbourne would one day star in something called a "reality show". I wasn't born yet when this video was recorded, but I can remember hearing this song throughout my childhood regardless because it had already become a hard rock classic. As a little girl, I thought this song sounded hard core, but catchy. Forty years later after this live performance, the song STILL rocks. You know how some rock songs just become more and more lame over time? Not this one.
I never would have guessed during my childhood and teen years that Ozzy Osbourne, known as the heavy metal star who bit the head off a bat, was such a "normal" guy at home. On his reality show The Osbournes, which ran from 2002 to 2005, we got to see him do stuff like try to figure out how to work his complicated remote control or take his family shopping. We found out that this man, who once seemed scary due to his bat-biting story, was actually a sweet and loving husband and father who has a great sense of humor and a down to Earth attitude.
Thanks to the popularity of the TV show The Osbournes, we had the opportunity to learn more about Ozzy. We found out that Ozzy didn't intend to bite the head off of a real bat. In fact, he thought it was a rubber bat. A woman threw it at him from the audience, and he discovered after biting into it that it was real.
Ozzy's not the exact same person we thought he was, but I don't think anyone was disappointed in finding out the mystery behind Ozzy. If anything, we loved finding out about the true Ozzy.
Here he was at Christmas on The Osbournes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Guszd88hka8

Sad news about Ronnie James Dio
I just wrote the blog entry above last night, and even read about Ronnie James Dio after I wrote that. I was shocked to find out this evening that Ronnie James Dio just died this morning. He was the lead singer of Black Sabbath when he took Ozzy Osbourne's place in 1979.
You know the "devil's horns" gesture that became popular with every heavy metal fan in the 80's? Ronnie James Dio was the man responsible for making that hand gesture popular. It was something he picked up from his grandmother. It was an Italian gesture she would do to ward off the evil eye.
He was best known for being in the band Dio.
His website had this message today from his wife,
"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.
- Wendy Dio"
