25 Years Ago: July 1985 - Back to the Future opened in theatres and became the top grossing film of 1985

Let's go back in time 25 years in our DeLorean to July 1985. Here we gooooooooo............

July 10, 1985

Dear Diary,

I just saw a movie that I TOTALLY LOVE. It's called "Back to the Future". The starring role is played by Michael J. Fox, who I have a total crush on. I have torn out all the full sized pictures I could find of him in "Tiger Beat" and "Bop" magazines and taped them to my walls next to Ralph Macchio. This movie is just as good as "Karate Kid" and Michael J. Fox is just as cute. Michael is cute on Family Ties as Alex P. Keaton, but he is even CUTER in "Back to the Future". For one thing, he is a skater, and he can skate on his skateboard SO GOOD. He looks SO FINE on his skateboard too in his jeans and Nikes.

In the movie he plays Marty McFly, who goes back in a time machine car to 1955. I cannot even imagine! 1955 seems so long ago! Girls wore prettier dresses to prom then, that's for sure, but they didn't have microwaves then or VCRs or tape recorders or MTV or even cable TV at all. They had black and white TV! That's SO WEIRD! How did they know what color people were wearing on TV? That freaks me out!

I wonder what people will think 30 years from now when they look back at 1985. Will we be flying in saucers in the sky then? Will people think we were totally old fashioned in 1985? I don't think so. I don't see how fluorescent colors will ever go out of style. Girls in the 50's wore beehives, but in 1985 we wear our hair back in big bow clips. EVERY girl  wears her hair like that, so I don't think that will ever go out of style. We also love stirrup pants and granny boots and big sweaters with triangles on them or big fluorescent button-up shirts.

I wanted to write more about the movie, but you will just have to see it. Right now I am going to go to the mall to get the new Weird Al Yankovic record I have been saving my allowance for. He changed the Madonna song to "Like a Surgeon" and Huey Lewis to "I Want a New Duck". I also want to go to Contempo Casuals or Express to see if I can find fluorescent socks to wear when I go back to school next semester. Cool beans!

LYLAS,

Mary
